Safari Run Fitness Scholarship

Safari Run wants to help prevent a very serious problem!

REPORTS STATE:

  • Over 70% of California’s 5th, 7th, and 9th graders failed to meet California standards for Physical Education.
  • One in three of California’s youth is struggling with obesity.
  • Obesity in children affects “his or her ability to learn and to achieve academically”, as stated by the NPCEA.
  • Overweight or obese youth will be challenged with increased health problem such as type 2 diabetes, asthma, high-blood pressure, stroke, heart disease and depression later in life.

Safari Run Scholarship’s goal is to serve as a resource for the public by promoting prevention through outreach and education.  


PROGRAM DETAILS:

SAFARI RUN will award up to two families guidance and support with their fitness goals.   Families are able to take any age appropriate fitness class; adults are encouraged to take the adult AM class.   Assistance is provided online and after class.   This program is ideal for students aged 8-14 who need help to pass California standards for Physical Education.  We want to beat the California Standard Physical Fitness Protocol and work towards reaching the familys ideal BMI (Body Mass Index).

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Students and their parents will provide a letter stating why they would like to participate in this scholarship and how this will affect their lifestyles.  Deadline: December 30th, 2011.
  •   Family is able to commit to 10 weeks of one established class in appropriate age group.    
  •   Family is able to meet with Coach Jodi once a week for fitness and nutritional guidance.
  •   Family is able to get moving and exercise every day.
  •   Family is able to keep a weekly nutritional journal.
  •   Family must be willing/motivated to take on the challenge and work towards new habits.

 

The sponsor of the SAFARI RUN Challenge, Jodi Hamilton-Eichensehr, has been a certified trainer since 1990 and has spent many hours creating fitness curriculums and motivating kids to learn the importance of eating right and keeping active.  Jodi will be donating her time and energy to help make a change in these families lives. 
2011 - Two families have been selected.
We will be accepting applications for two new families November 2011, and selected January 2012.
